An Altar Server assists the priest during the Mass. The children on the altar during Mass dressed in black and white robes are the Altar Servers, so if you want a general idea of what an altar server does during Mass, pay attention to them. As this is an important and very visible ministry, the children will be trained by one of the priests. This ministry is open to laypersons, and youth in the fifth grade and older who have received First Reconciliation and Eucharist
We are definitely in need of more servers and would welcome your child’s assistance at Sunday Mass, but being an Altar Server is a great commitment and responsibility for you and your child. The expectations of children who participate in this ministry are as follows…
-Serving at Sunday Mass at least twice a month.
-Arriving at Mass at least 15 minutes before the Mass you’re scheduled to serve at.
-Being willing to serve during special occasions (Christmas, Easter, Confirmation, etc.).
-Being attentive and respectful while serving at Mass.
-Being dressed appropriately for Mass.
-Make sure to be responsible for the Altar Server schedule. Know when you are scheduled and be on time.
-Take responsibility to find a replacement for the Mass you are scheduled for, if you are unable to be there.
Because most children cannot accomplish all of these expectations without the assistance of their parents, we are asking you to also make a commitment to help your child fulfill these expectations. If you and your child are willing to accept these commitments and expectations, please fill out the Altar Server registration form and contact the Parish Office at 727-584-2318. We will then arrange a time to begin training.
In answering your Mass preference, please be aware that the 10:00 AM Mass is currently the only Mass with a sufficient number of servers. All the other Masses are in need of more servers, (especially the 5:30 PM) and we would appreciate if you would consider serving at these other Masses throughout the month. If the 10:00 AM Mass is the only Mass you are able to serve, it may mean you will only serve once a month.
